Andrew Goodwin - Wires

 1. There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics:

There is a link between lyrics and visuals as they both describe and show what the visuals illustrate and the type of person the protagonist is. The lyrics itself talk about how the "Wires" have taken over him and how he is not the same person as how he was before. Therefore the protagonist in the music video is acting not in its usual self.

 Example from a lyric:

"The wires got the best of him"

The music does however, fit in the theme of the lyrics as both the male and the female singers is talking mainly about how the protagonist has been taken over by the evilness that's inside of him and how the masks and the way he is acting can also show his craziness and how he doesn't like to show his facial expression which is why it is hidden away with a mask. The music is a slow beat but with a meaning. The slowness can be linked to the "Wires" consuming slowly but not instantly but is becoming a more and more different type of person. The music is more of a depressing feel as the protagonist is going through a hard time of his life which links to the theme of dark filters, focus/ lingering shots, camera movement, fast editing and also the use of effects to show the type of person he is.

Lyrics:

We talked about making it
I'm sorry that you never made it
And it pains me just to hear you have to say it
You knew the game and played it
It kills to know that you have been defeated
I see the wires pulling while you're breathing
You knew you had a reason
It killed you like diseases
I can hear it in your voice while your speaking you can't be treated
Mr. Know it all had his reign and his fall
At least that's what his brain is telling all
If he said help me kill the president
I'd say he needs medicine
Sick of screaming let us in
The wires got the best of him
All that he invested in goes
Straight to hell
Straight to hell
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Straight to hell
Straight to hell
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa

He told me I should take it in
Listen to every word he's speaking
The wires getting older I can hear the way their creaking
As their holding him
Well I could see it in his jaw
That all he ever wanted was a job
He tells me to be raw
Admits to me that every little flaw
That never let him sit upon the top
Won't tell me to stop
Thinks that I should be a little cautious
I can tell the wires pulled
If he said help me kill the president
I'd say he needs medicine
Sick of screaming let us in
The wires got the best of him
All that he invested in goes
Straight to hell
Straight to hell
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Straight to hell
Straight to hell
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
I'm having trouble in believing
And I just started seeing
Light at the beginning of the tunnel but he tells me that I'm dreaming
When he talks I hear his ghosts every word they say to me
I just pray the wires aren't coming
If he said help me kill the president
I'd say he needs medicine
Sick of screaming let us in
The wires got the best of him
All that he invested in goes
Straight to hell
Straight to hell
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Straight to hell
Straight to hell
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Straight to hell
Straight to hell
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Straight to hell
Straight to hell
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa

2. There is a relationship between the music and visuals, with the visual illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics:

There is also a link between music and visuals, in particular the atmosphere of the video which gives it that powerful tone of the music. The slow beat of the music is represented by dull colours and not so very bright setting, depressing and not so energetic dancing. There is also an element of inclusivism and that anyone can join in and sing as the lyrics are quite catchy. Lastly the tempo of the editing is on time with the track without any delays which makes it more appealing when the music video is snappy and on time.

3. Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography:

"Wires" is a Indie rock/ pop music written by Jeremy Freedman, Zach Abels and Jesse. The genre of music is typical to the style that the protagonist dances to and lip syncs of what the singers are saying in which the video meets many of the Indie rock/ pop genres. The protagonist uses a variety of of simple dance styles in this music video, sending a message that people could and should dance as it is something that can still be fun and is also great to vibe with the beat of the music. The music video included scenes of the protagonist in many simple but effective dance moves which represents the type of person he is such as making random dance movements and the orange justice. Dance can be a typical feature of indie rock/ pop music as the artists often want the music to portray a fell good atmosphere that their audience can dance/ sing along to.

4. Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of their star/performers:

"Wires" also meets the 4th feature of Goodwin's feature of music video's as the protagonist of this music video is the solo artist and is at the centre of the video at all times. The camera is always focused on him, promoting him as the artist with close up shots of his face and long shots of his face at the centre of the shot. He is the only one there with duplicates of him self in most cases to show his importance in the video. He also stands out as he is the only character in the music video and he also shows how the lyrics describe him as a character. Yet alone all this dancing doesn't link to the lyrics but a reference to show that he still has that good in him.

5.  Voyeurism:

Due to the protagonist being the centre of the video, there is a lot of focus on him. The protagonist is acting and occasionally doing minimal dance movements and where ever he is, he is always the main focus so that it fits with the music. Voyeurism is used throughout the music video with the use of camera angles/ shots and the outfits in which the protagonist wears. For example, when the scenes change from daylight to night time, there is a sense of more evilness with in the character that is overwhelming him and how wearing a hoodie and a mask to cover up your face can show that you're hiding your feelings away from people. The use of simple colours of the clothing's can also show that the character is a simple person and doesn't go extreme when wearing cloths. The music video doesn't include any use of girls nor any girls showing their skin when dancing in which this music video has no intentions of having anything sexual. Overall, there is some voyeurism, the protagonist is very much in control and uses it in his wat to portray his own messages.

6. There are likely to be intertextual references to other music videos, TV shows, books, movies, games etc:

Finally the last feature is the use of intertextual references. The main key intertextual reference throughout the video is referring to a more psychotic person. The visuals that were used were to show resemblance of using a delayed self of him following him to represent the "Wires" which refers back to the evilness with in him that's been taken over. The video influences the effects and impacts it in a way that it makes the video feel more alive but still depressing as you'll  understand the lyrics and video in more depth. This makes us feel bad for the guy as we start to understand more in depth about him which makes the video feel more real. No text style were shown throughout the music video.
